My aunt Jana told me that this sauerkraut dish used to be sold in cans during communism. She has never tried it but she once found a recipe in a magazine. My grandfather tasted it at her house and wanted a recipe. Then my uncle asked for the recipe. And that is how this dish became a favorite at her house. Now she passed the recipe on to me.
Ingredients:
1 bag of sauerkraut (17.5 oz)
1/2 c rice, uncooked
1 tbsp sugar
Oil
1 onion
1 lb ground beef
1/2 lb kielbasa, cut in half slices
Paprika
Salt and pepper
1 hot pepper (optional)
1 container of sour cream
Directions:
- In a pot, combine the sauerkraut, rice and sugar. Cook over medium heat for a few minutes, adding water if needed so the sauerkraut does not burn. The rice will soak up some of the liquid.
- Sauté onion with a little oil. Add the beef and brown it, breaking up the chunks with a wooden spoon. Add the kielbasa, salt, pepper, paprika and hot pepper.
- In a greased casserole dish, layer half of the sauerkraut, all the meat, and the other half of sauerkraut. Top with sour cream.
- Bake at 400 for 30 minutes.
